Speaking about Networking in Valencia

I’m currently in Valencia for the EDEN (European Distance and E-Learning Network) 2010 annual conference, and am presenting one of the projects I’m currently working on, namely TelEurope.eu. The means of doing this is by presenting a paper during the session International E-Learning Initiatives: Strategy and Practice. The paper, is titled Engaging the Community in Multidisciplinary TEL Research: A Case-Study from Networking in Europe.

Teaching Inclusive Education in the Balkans

I have spent the last several months working with some friends at the Centre for Education Policy in Serbia on a project called “Mapping Policies and Practices for Inclusion in Contexts of Social and Cultural Diversity”, financed by the European Training Foundation. Together with a team of 27 experts from throughout the region, we have put together 7 country reports, looking at the situation in each of the countries in the Western Balkans.

Education Scenarios Part 5: Observations from the Scenarios

In the final part of our 5 part series giving an overview of future education scenarios (Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 here), we attempt to make our own set of conclusions regarding the future of education and training systems in Europe. Our conclusions are based on an analysis of the various scenarios proposed by different authors, and thus, mainly constitute an attempt to find grounds of commonality and agreement between the various scenario building exercises which have been undertaken in the past years.

Education Scenarios Part 2: Scenarios that embrace the entire development of learning systems

With regards to scenarios that embrace the entire development of learning systems, Carneiro, describes tree scenarios of a learning society, focusing on the interactions of three key variables: paradigm shifts; delivery modes; and driving forces. According to him (9):

“A summation of the 3 by 3 resulting combinations could be briefly described in the following matrix:

¨ Paradigm shifts: from industry (past), to globalisation (present thrust), and moving towards a New Renaissance period (utopian vision).

¨ Delivery modes: from uniform, rote systems (past) to segmented distribution (present market-driven trend), and gradually accommodating increasing levels of personalisation/customisation (utopian vision).

¨ Driving forces: from bureaucracy-led (past preference for national or State-controlled systems) to market-led arrangements (present move), which, in turn, should give way to empowered communities (utopian vision of a radical devolution to civil society).”
